Aspects of the Theory of Disney Princesses – Mark Liberman

Little is known about how gendered language is presented in children’s media. Data on compliments in the Disney Princess films were analyzed for gender of speaker and recipient, and for type of compliment given/received.

Liberman highlights some of the findings presented by Carmen Fought at the 2016 LSA Annual Meeting. It emphasizes the importance of referring to female characters in media in terms other than their appearances. I believe this could translate fairly well into the kinds of feedback we give students, male and female, in both e-learning software and testing scenarios.
